Rupat Island

Rupat Island

Rupat Island is situated off the eastern coast of Sumatra, across from Dumai city, and only 24 km from Malaysia. It is an island with dense tropical forests, white sand beaches and villages that edge the waterfront. Fishing and farming of rubber and palm oil make up a large part of the economy. Because of its proximity to Malaysia many from Rupat Island also work in Malaysia as laborers. Electricity is found only on parts of the island and many villages alternate days on which they share electricity.

Rupat Island has great potential for tourism because of its natural beauty, and local leaders desire to see it develop as a travel destination. Due to the lack of economic resources, however, the reality of this happening is low.

Exalt the name of the Lord, the God of Israel, in the islands of the sea. From the ends of the earth we hear singing: "Glory to the Righteous One."
Isaiah 24:15b-16a (NIV)

  • Pray that the Name of the Lord will be exalted from this island of the sea and that one day we will hear "Glory to the Righteous One" from a large number of Rupat Island's inhabitants.
