Concert Area

Near the main street cutting through the city is an open square surrounded on all sides by brightly painted traditional Malay structures. Facing the square is a blue-roofed, elevated stage for concerts and entertainers, and at the back white wooden stadium seats are provided for those too tired to stand. The square fulfills a variety of functions when not being used for performances. Volleyball and soccer games often go on at the same time and bicycle taxi drivers loiter, waiting for customers. Mobile food stalls line the streets around the square, the smell of sate (chargrilled meat on a stick) mingling with the ever-present odor of tobacco smoke.

How then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they are sent?
Romans 10:14-15a (NIV)

  • Pray that followers of Jesus will commit to live and work among the Riau Malay and that as a result the Riau Malay would then go and do the same among other peoples.
  • Pray that his concert area will be a place where the Riau Malay will one day gather for prayer and the reading of Scripture.
