Teluk Kuantan Region

In one area of the heart land of the Riau Malay people, two winding rivers define the landscape and life of the Malay who live there. Similar to other historical settlements, communities here have sprouted up along the rivers. Join us in a prayer journey along the crescent formed by the larger of the two rivers.

Teluk Kuantan

We begin our journey along the river by stopping in Teluk Kuantan, which is the local district’s hub. The main government offices for district are perched on a hill located at the edge of the city. A man we met in Teluk Kuantan, Mr. Putra, works in one of these buildings. Unfortunately, the day we met him was his last day there.

After he supported the losing candidate during recent district leadership elections, the winning party has decided to punish Mr. Putra. Even though he is qualified for a higher position, he was re-assigned to a remote office and not given a new job title, in order to lessen his influence in the local government. Moving to this new position will also have repercussions for his family, who may eventually have to relocate.

  • Pray that people who are in government positions would stop acting only in their personal interests, but would instead fear God and serve the interests of the public.
  • Pray that those who are in positions of power and influence would “act justly and love mercy and walk humbly with [their] God.” (Micah 6:8).
