Tembilahan

Night Market

The city of Tembilahan is transformed at night, as a market fills the open piazza and lines the side streets. Men sit behind heaps of shoes, women peer between hanging handbags, various kinds of fruit are arranged in piles and a popular Indonesian pop song blares from a stereo for sale. Naked bulbs light up the stalls, causing customers to squint as they pass by. Sinewy men pedaling bicycle taxis wind their way through the throngs of people, but in the social atmosphere of the market there is no rush and no one in a hurry.

Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity
Joel 2:13 (NIV)

  • Pray that the Riau Malay who gather at this market will come to know God as a gracious and compassionate God who desires to have a personal relationship with them.
